Banksy’s “Dismaland”

Over Thanksgiving, I went to a Banksy exhibition in New York, and our upcoming project on creating a public intervention art made me think back to Banksy’s “Dismaland” project in particular. Banksy created Dismaland as the opposite of what Disneyland has to provide in order to critique consumerism and its use of spectacle to draw people away from current societal and political issues that actually need to be paid attention to. He successfully does this by twisting and warping Disneyland into a depressing, dismal, and dystopian amusement park using art such as a distorted Ariel, placing a half sunk military car, and creating toppled over signs signaling messages that drive home hard truths of reality.
