The History of ASCII Art

This article dives into some of the history behind ASCII art (American Standard Code For Information Interchange) and its role in internet culture. ASCII art involves the use of characters to make images or figures, typically with non-letter characters like /\.,[]_-# and more. ASCII art was heavily used in early video games on the internet to depict rooms in an adventure game or draw board games. I use ASCII art emoticons every day with some of my favorites being t(o.ot) and ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
