Data Visualization: picturing social networks in COMM-407

This week’s work with Processing in creating images with code and our upcoming project on visualizing data and creating abstract art using numbers reminds me of what I’ve been working on throughout the semester in a Communications course studying social networks. Using the software Gephi, we are able to import csv files and organize them into “webs” of different layouts and visual properties depending on the type of analyses which are run. Through this, we are, in some ways, creating a type of data-based art, one which uses sets of numbers, such as the numbers of nodes and the numbers of ties between nodes, to construct images.
