This past summer, Doyers Street, otherwise known as the “Bloody Angle” in Chinatown, NYC was transformed with a bright geometric mural on its historic winding street. In an effort to bring tourism back into the neighborhood after it was hit hard from the pandemic, artist Dasic Fernández painted this rice-field inspired piece. With its awkward winding turns, it’s difficult for sunlight to shine through; When I visited it during the summer, I loved how the mural brightened up the space. This mural subtly addresses an issue (low business in the area due to both the pandemic and the racism stirred from the pandemic) and works to combat that by encouraging tourism by transforming the space into a Instagram hotspot.
