Sci Fi Art by Devin Elle Kurtz

This week, I saw some of the work of Devin Elle Kurtz, a Los Angeles based graphic designer and background painter. The entire purpose of Kurtz’s work is to transport the viewer into the artist’s imagination, and usually depict a futuristic goal usually surrounding environmental protection and interaction. Most of Kurtz’s pieces show humans getting to have up-close encounters with rare or endangered animals, insinuating a future where not only are those species saved from endangerment, but they are admired and studied more frequently by all kinds of people that now have access to view them. I think the goal of Kurtz’s art is really reflective of the goals we discussed about speculative design: to encourage working towards an idealized goal that might seem unrealistic in real life, but is brought to life in the artwork.
