Dutch fashion designer and engineer Anouk Wipprecht has spent 20 years developing the technology behind her “Proximity Dress.” She explained that the dress “measures the intimate space, the personal space, the social space and the public space of the wearer.” Using ultrasonic range finders, the dress detects anyone in its surroundings and puffs up when someone comes too close. Wipprecht’s design has been worn by models around the world, including in the U.S., China, Russia, and Amsterdam.
