Tiffany & Co’s About Love campaign features a rarely seen before Jean-Michel Basquiat painting titled “Equals Pi”. The campaign, which also features Jay-Z and Beyoncé, sparked a debate on the usage of art in the commercialization of luxury goods. Tiffany’s Vice-President of Product and Communications argued that Basquiat used the blue in the painting’s background as an homage to the brand; while others questioned his statement. This article was particularly interesting given our Desktop Portrait assignment. It reinforced the idea that a mere background color can impact an artwork’s interpretation, and thus should be utilized as an intentional asset.
