“Let’s Go to the Battle” by Aya Takano

The urban surrealism of “Let’s Go to the Battle” really draws me to Aya Takano’s works. The collision of history, magic, and this urban modernism is really fascinating. Takano’s composition of the various elements appear intentional with the two androgenous feminine figures floating in the forefront of the piece and with the different representations of a bustling city peeking out from behind them with this direct perspective. I also quite enjoy this painting because personally, to me, oil painting is a traditional and orthodox medium and to see it used to create such a contemporary image makes the medium more accessible, approachable, and less intimidating to young artists.
